The advertisements offer a glimpse both of famous names which still survive today such as Homepride, Oxo, Horlicks, Bovril, Heinz and St Ivel, and those which have long since dissapeared. The book contains over 280 recipes and over 100 menus from the past that range from lavish entertaining to wartime rationing. The contributors include Lady Violet Bonham Carter, Sir Osbert Sitwell and Rex Whistler.
