What makes a horseman or woman truly great? What is it that differentiates the "great" from the very "good"?. This book attempts to answer these questions and begins by establishing the basis of selection for the title "Great Horseman". The book looks at the flat, national hunt and the three FEI disciplines of dressage, show jumping and the three-day event. Each sport opens with a brief history of its development in which the most successful international riders from the past and present, are mentioned. Those riders whose outstanding success entitles them to be called "Great Horsemen of the World" are introduced and their careers examined, with a view not so much to recording their successes - details of which can be found elsewhere - as to establishing what influenced their development and what made them better riders than their contemporaries.
