The day in focus was a summer Friday when many writers and photographers covered the length and breadth of Britain, travelling some of the 10,335 route miles and visiting some of the 2,426 stations. The book contains a portrait of the activities and people, as well as the equipment and often historic and scenic backgrounds that make up this industry. The author is editor of "Rail" and former editor of "Jane's Railway Year".
