Divided into two sections, this text deals with training beginner runners from scratch up to their first 10km (6-mile) race and then tackles the more serious topic of half-, full- and ultra-marathon running. Through artwork and photographs, "The Marathon Runner's Handbook" explains physiology and running science in an accessible way. From how muscles work, choosing your running shoes, optimal nutrition, and how to avoid injuries to training schedules plus VO2 and pacing tables, this text teaches athletes what they need to know to run a marathon. Further inspiration is found in chapters on today's high-achieving marathoners and the world's most famous long-distance runners.
Bruce Fordyce, one of the greatest ultramarathon athletes of all time, has raced in major marathon and ultramarathon races around the world. He has set numerous records, some of which remain unbeaten to this day. He came first in the South African Comrades Marathon an unprecedented eight consecutive years from 1981 to 1988, and then came first again in 1990. Bruce has written two books on the Comrades Marathon and is a sports columnist for various newspapers and magazines and the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Sports Trust. Marielle Renssen is an editor, writer and runner. She encountered her first 'runner's high' when she claimed bronze in a half marathon three years ago. Fifteen half marathons, a few 15km (9-mile) races and a good handful of medals later, she is all set to compete in her first 42.2km (26.2-mile) race. She writes on travel and lifestyle and is a contributor to Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Guide to South Africa.
