This introduction to renovating traditional buildings will guide the reader through assembling a team and help them to respect the existing structure of their traditional building and avoid costly renovation mistakes.
Traditional buildings are resilient structures that have often lasted for hundreds of years. Beautifully crafted from high-quality materials, they sit well in a landscape that has matured around them. There is no reason why these buildings cannot be updated and adapted to provide beautiful, practical accommodation long into the future, but they can present some new and unique challenges to anyone who is unfamiliar with them. Written by an RIAS-accredited conservation architect, Renovating Traditional Buildings will guide you through assembling a team, teach you how to respect the existing structure of your traditional building and help you to avoid costly renovation mistakes. Careful planning and a methodical approach are the keys to a successful project. With the correct expertise and the clear advice in this book, you should end up with accommodation that fulfils your needs and retains its traditional charm.

Calum Maclean is a director of the Inverness architectural practice, AIDH:NORTH and is an RIAS accredited conservation architect. He is a member of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and has over 20 years' experience working with private and public sector clients in both Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. Calum grew up in Caithness in the North of Scotland before studying Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art. Throughout his life he has worked in towns and countryside that enjoy some of the finest examples of traditional buildings which have survived centuries of change. These buildings provide a richness and beauty to the culture and identity of each community. This appreciation has ultimately inspired his guiding principle that architecture, whether traditional or contemporary, tells us the story of people's lives. We should take care to ensure the story is told well and shared with others.
