This volume takes players and coaches through every facet of author Paul Wardlaw's practice system, from mental toughness training to the demanding drills. Within the first week or two of use, the system raises players' levels of concentration, motivation, confidence and conditioning. More importantly, players develop a resilience to match-play pressure and welcome the challenge of even the toughest opponent. Wardlaw recognized that the keys to productive practices are high expectations, match-like conditions, drills that keep players fully engaged throughout the session and an evaluation system that objectively measures player performance. The Performance Index is a tool that allows coaches to asses execution and effort, monitor improvement throughout the season and more fairly rank players on the team.

Paul Wardlaw has worked his way up to the top of the tennis coaching ranks. In the early 1990s, he turned Division III Kenyon College into a national powerhouse, leading them to three NCAA National Team Championships. In recognition of his outstanding coaching skills, Wardlaw received the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Coach of the Year Award. Wardlaw then turned his attention to the University of Iowa women's tennis program. In only two short years as head coach, he increased the team's standing to its highest ranking ever and led them to their first NCAA tournament bid and a trip to the Sweet 16. Wardlaw has written "The Wardlaw Directionals," which appeared in the book Coaching Tennis and will be featured in the upcoming Human Kinetics video High-Percentage Tennis. He resides in Iowa City with his wife and two daughters.
