This introduction to the problem of location lighting for single camera operators is geared towards student and trainee cameramen. It is also intended to be useful to professionals as it focuses on the specific needs of the video cameraman.
Successful single camera operators must have the knowledge and ability to undertake a variety of tasks traditionally associated with a multi-camera crew. They must be skilled in lighting, composition and framing as well as audio and editing techniques. This text introduces the problems of location lighting for single camera operators and provides insight into the technology and techniques required to solve these problems. The approach is of a basic and introductory nature, geared towards student and trainee cameramen. It is also intended to be useful as a refresher course to professionals as it is contains key information, theory and practical approaches to different lighting situations.

Alan Bermingham works as a freelance lighting trainer and consultant with International Television Training Consultancy, a company he formed in 1992 after his post as Head of Lighting at Television South West. Alan started his broadcasting career with the BBC in 1959; after many years at the BBC Engineering Training Centre, he moved to TV-am as a Lighting Director for two years.
