Love might not be what we think it is. We all seek the happiness that comes from loving and being loved, yet we often find ourselves dissatisfied in our relationships and unable to grasp the cause. Thich Nhat Hanh here shows the way to overcome our recurrent obstacles to love—by learning to be mindful, open, and present with ourselves and others. As he explains, 'training is needed in order to love properly, and to be able to give happiness and joy, you must practice deep looking directed toward the person you love. Because if you do not understand this person, you cannot love properly. Understanding is the essence of love.'
This quintessential guide to loving also introduces the four key aspects of love described in the Buddhist tradition—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and freedom—and describes many simple and direct ways in which we can practice authentic love in our everyday lives.

Wemust learn to speak with love again. I remember a young American who came to usto practice. One day, he was asked to write a letter to his mother in order topractice loving speech, which was easy for him. On the other hand, it wasimpossible for him to write a letter to his father. His father had died, but hestill suffered every time he thought of him. Just the idea of picking up a pento write to his father already caused him a great deal of suffering. Iproposed the following to him. For one week he practiced mindful breathing, saying to himself, 'I am breathing in—,I see myself as a child offive.' When one is a little boy of five, one is very delicate andvulnerable. As he was breathing in, he saw himself as the object of his owncompassion. During the second week, he meditated on his father: 'I ambreathing in—,I see my father as a little child of five, I am breathing out—,Ismile at the little boy who was my father.' Fora whole week, the young American did this very faithfully and veryenthusiastically. He put a photo of his father on the table and every time hewalked into the room and looked at it, he practiced mindful breathing. He hadnever imagined that his father could have been a child of five. Suddenly theyoung man acknowledged the presence of his father as a little boy. It was thefirst time that he realized that his father had suffered as a little boy, andsuddenly he felt compassion. Finally one evening he found it possible to writea first letter to his father. That transformed him completely, and now he haspeace in his heart. —,fromTrueLove
