This illustrated, practical handbook offers a comprehensive guide for dog owners. It explores the enduring relationship that has existed between dogs and humans, from the earliest days when dogs were reliable allies for hunters and herdsmen to modern selective breeding which has produced dogs to suit virtually any temperament, need and personal circumstance. This book offers guidance in choosing the right kind of dog, introducing it into your home and taking the best possible care of it. A comprehensive chapter on nutrition details the optimum diet, whether commercial or home-cooked, based on the dog's age, breed, level of activity and general health. Careful advice guides the dog owner through a trip to the veterinary clinic: when it is important to go and what results can be expected. At-a-glance, extensive tables, reveal signs of ill-health, possible causes and action that must be taken, especially in the case of emergencies. Clear instructions on obedience training using modern approaches - based on rewaard rather than reprimand - should ensure an enjoyable, well-behaved pet, while expert advice is also given on how to correct any problem behaviour that may arise.

Graham Meadows is passionate about animals and his devotion led him to spend many years as a veterinary surgeon in rural England and then in New Zealand, later becoming curator of Auckland Zoo. Working closely with animals over many years has enabled him to acquire an encyclopedic knowledge of their characteristics and an instinctive understanding of their behaviour. He has written An Illustrated Guide to Dogs and An Illustrated Guide to Cots, as well as The Noble Cat, and over 60 educational titles for children. Graham lives near Auckland, New Zealand, where he is also a photographer and well-known television personality. Elsa Flint is a vet specializing in animal behaviour. She has worked in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand, and now lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
