The 23-page introduction to the book explains healthy eating principles, including top tips for healthy eating, the nutrients in food, weight loss, diabetes, carbohydrate counting, the Glycaemic Index, diabetes and weight management, and how to use the book. The 292 pages of photographs are arranged into 26 colour-coded sections: Biscuits & Crackers, Bread, Breakfast, Cakes & Bakery, Cheese, Desserts, Drinks, Eggs, Fruit, Gluten Free, Meals, Meal Accompaniments, Meat, Chicken & Fish, Milk & Cream, Nuts & Seeds, Pasta & Noodles, Potatoes & Tubers, Rice & Grains, Sandwiches, Snacks & Confectionery, Soup, Spreads & Sauces, Takeaways, Vegetables & Pulses, Vegetarian Alternatives, Yogurt. There are up to 6 different portion photos for each food item, with the weight in grams shown below each photo.
Understanding the calorie and nutrient content of food and drink is essential for diabetes management, weight loss and healthy eating and this book is an invaluable support tool for anyone engaged in this process. Carbs & Cals educates the user and helps them make informed choices about carbohydrate and calorie counting, and how to reduce calories and fat intake by choosing a smaller portion or swapping a food item that is high in calories for a healthier option. The book is in association with Diabetes UK.
