Addressing issues of environmental change from an Earth Science perspective, The Pace of Environmental Change brings together in a temporal framework evidence for changes at the Earth's surface provided by geology, geomorphology, hydrology, and oceanography. It evaluates the nature and rates of change under natural conditions and the role of human activity in modifying, and often accelerating, these rates. Designed for senior undergraduate and graduate students in university courses concerned with environmental issues, it is also suitable for use in earth sciences and physical geography programs.

Chapter 1 : Global Environmental Change: Context and Focus (largely as before, but adjusted to cater for changes below). Chapter 2 : Nature and Perception of Environmental Change (ditto, as above). Chapter 3 : Measurement of Time and Change through Time (as before but modified to incorporate measurement techniques relevant to prehistory (i.e., proxies) and historic time (e.g., narrative, instrumental). Chapter 4 : Tectonism and Environmental Change (new chapter invoking data from earlier proposal plus information from the other proposal on this theme). Chapter 5 : Atmosphere and Environmental Change (new data see also below). Chapter 6 : Hydrosphere and Cryosphere and Environmental Change (new data, see also below). Chapter 7 : Geomorphological Change (data from earlier proposal, see also below). Chapter 8 : Biogeographic Change (new data, see also below). Chapter 9 : Retrospect (as before, but modified to reflect new approach, including the integration of the foregoing material into an environmental whole). Chapter 10 : Prospect (ditto, but with emphasis on future environmental planning and management, including political, legal, and social ramifications).
