Cardiff, the Welsh capital and home to the National Assembly of Wales, is a modern vibrant city with many attractions for visitors from all over the world. An insignificant little fishing port with a couple of churches became, in industrial times, a boom town, in which churches and chapels of all possible denominations sprang up, to serve the needs of the nineteenth-century population explosion. Jean Rose uncovers a variety of places of worship, some grand, some humble, but all with a story to tell. Today, many of these buildings have gone, as religious attendance declined in the late twentieth century. Despite this, they are a valuable part of Cardiff's rich heritage, and deserve to be marked for present and future generations. Recent years have seen church growth, both traditional and innovative, and this too is part of Cardiff's ongoing story.
Jean was a former English teacher and examiner; Lancastrian, but has lived in Cardiff 33 years. She enjoys visiting churches and for some years acted as guide to her local church, St Margaret's Roath. She co-edit and writes a quarterly column for the Llandaff diocesan newspaper 'Croeso', on interesting churches in the diocese. In 2009 published a free leaflet on 'Discover Cardiff Churches', for Tourist Information Centres, etc and in 2010 wrote and designed a new guidebook to St German's Church Roath. She gives talks to local groups (MU, TWG, local history societies, Victorian Society, etc) and in preparing this book, has learned an awful lot about Cardiff's religious history and the many denominations involved in this! Jean Rose is a local author who lives in Penylan, Cardiff. She is married with 3 grown-up children and 1 grandchild.
