New in paperback, this is a practical guide demonstrating valuable upholstery skills that give new life to both period pieces and modern furniture - from an ottoman and dining chairs to stools, headboards and screens.
In eye-capturing style The Upholsterer's Handbook offers everything you need and more, in order to prepare and inspire you to create beautifully upholstered furniture. The upholstered pieces range in skill level from simple seats to more complex items such as a button-back chair. Various styles of furniture are covered, from classic and elegant to other more styled and designer pieces. The Upholsterer's Handbook opens with sections on sourcing furniture, tools and materials, and choosing fabrics - including finishes and trimmings, which are often the key to the success of a piece. With special photography throughout, basic techniques are illustrated step-by-step, from stripping back to top stuffing to making cushions. 18 stunning projects are featured with varying skill levels, covering such diverse items as a G-plan chair, a sofa, a '70s flower-shaped stool, dining chairs, and headboards. Throughout Nicole Fulton demonstrates techniques using linen, satin, velvet, leather, cowhide, and other fabrics that give the furniture a unique contemporary look.

Nicole Fulton is the director of Walnut, a company she set up offering a range of furniture pieces, old and new, reupholstered in an innovative collection of contemporary fabrics. Having previously worked in the equities division of a major investment bank in London, Nicole now travels extensively around Europe sourcing unique and interesting pieces for reupholstery. Stuart Weston has been running his own successful upholstery company in Brentwood, Essex, for 14 years. Before this he spent 16 years apprenticed and employed in the industry, learning the highly skilled art of quality upholstery, and also renovating and creating new furniture. His passion for creating exceptionally well-finished pieces of furniture is self-evident. Roger Dixon, freelance photographer, has worked for many publishing companies, national newspapers, and magazines. His work ranges from documentary and portraiture to interior design and fine art photography. He lives in London.
