This fascinating selection of photographs traces some of the many ways in which Hinderwell & Lythe have changed and developed over the last century.
The upper reaches of the East Coast of Yorkshire are a much visited region. In particular the ancient seaport of Whitby is a popular destination with holidaymakers. From this delightfully traditional seaside resort it is possible to make easy excursions further up the coast to Sandsend, Runswick Bay, and Staithes and beyond. To achieve these places by road, it is necessary to pass through Lythe and Hinderwell. Not so well-known as Runswick Bay or Staithes with its Captain Cook associations and once centre of a major artists' community, they are, nevertheless two villages with many attractions of note. There are also numerous facilities for the visitor in the way of overnight accommodation and caravan sites, and in the nineteenth century were often the goal of choice.

Alan Whitworth was born in Huddersfield and now lives in Whitby. He worked in graphic design and printing before becoming involved in local history and the preservation of old buildings. A founding member of the British Dovecote Society, Alan now writes and lectures full time on architecture and local history.
