This guide to 60 of the best hikes around Sacramento leads you to urban green spaces such as the California State Capitol Park, as well as out of the city to creeks, streams, and old-growth forests.
Carefully researched on foot, hiking enthusiast Jordan Summers introduces area residents and visitors to an array of the best day hikes from casual riverside nature hikes to rugged foothill treks within roughly an hour's drive of Sacramento. Filled with detailed descriptions of firsthand trail notes, this newly updated edition of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Sacramento helps hikers discover their choices with concise at-a-glance information highlighting details such as location, access, directions, distances, scenery, and preparation details that help hikers get the most from each outing. Precise maps, descriptive text, photos, and trailhead coordinates guide you on your way quickly and keep you on route reliably. Discover the varied geology, the cultural history, and the natural beauty of the foothills, mother lode, and delta regions in 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Sacramento.

Jordan Summers has had more fun sleeping on rock, snow, and dirt than any one person should be allowed. As a boy in Virginia, he would camp in the woods behind his house. Since then, he’s spent absurd amounts of time in the three major ranges and many minor ones, and in forests, canyons, and deserts in every season and weather condition. From 2007 to 2009, Jordan hiked about 1,300 miles to research and write 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Sacramento (first edition), Five-Star Trails around Lake Tahoe, and Easy Hikes Close to Home: Sacramento for Menasha Ridge Press. Jordan is an alumnus of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Wilderness Outdoor Educator program, a Leave No Trace trainer, and an NOLS/Wilderness Medicine Institute–certified Wilderness First Responder. All of these affiliations help him pursue his passion: to help hikers of all abilities get out there, have a great time there, leave no trace there, and come home safely from there. A volunteer for the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Jordan lives in the Sacramento suburb of Elk Grove, California, with his partner, Karin Connolly. Most importantly, he and Karin frequently get to hike with his children and grandchildren.
