Join Brian E. Davies on a historical walk from Flat Holm to Brecon and discover Wales's rich and diverse history, some of its more colourful characters and some of its best pubs.
Using a historical perspective, Wales: A Walk Through Time describes a unique walk through a remarkable country. Illustrated with a fascinating collection of old photographs and contemporary images, the route has been specially chosen to explore the sheer beauty and diversity of Wales. It will eventually reach Anglesey, but in this first of three parts we are treated to the glorious landscapes and proud industrial heritage of South Wales. Beginning with a boat trip to the interesting offshore island of Flat Holm, where Lighthouse Point marks the most southerly spot in Wales the walk resumes on the mainland at East Aberthaw and follows the southern coast to Barry and Cardiff Bay, heading through the city to Caerphilly and the valleys. It goes through the Blaenavon World Heritage Site and Abergavenny, then along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and through the Brecon Beacons National Park. We encounter characters such as Marconi, Captain Scott, Roald Dahl, Tommy Cooper and some of the heroes of Rorke's Drift. Historical events are recalled, giving the reader a real sense of how the past is present at every step. And we cross the paths of earlier travellers, such as Giraldus Cambrensis and George Borrow, who had their own take on some of the places we visit. Each chapter covers a day's walking, full-colour maps show the way, and a number of tempting hostelries are discovered en route. Not just a guide for walkers, it will also appeal to historians and indeed all who love Wales.

Brian retired from the Electricity Supply Industry a number of years ago, after a career as an engineer and manager. Originally from the Eastern Valley of Gwent, he moved to Mumbles some forty years ago. He was educated at West Mon Grammar School in Pontypool and completed his professional qualifications at the University of Wales, Institute of Science and Technology in Cardiff. He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Brian is a keen singer and has sung in choirs all around the world having toured overseas with the Cwmbran, Morriston Orpheus and Phoenix Choirs and currently sings with Mumbles A Cappella. His memoir ‘My Choir Journey’ relates his singing experiences. His interest in local history saw him publish books about Mumbles and Gower pubs in 2006, 'Mumbles and Gower Through Time’ and ‘A-Z of Mumbles & Gower’ and as a keen walker he has written a book ‘Wales: A Walk Through Time’. Brian enjoys giving talks about his books to many different organisations. He is a Past President of the Probus Club of Mumbles and a Past Chairman of Oystermouth Historical Association. He and his wife, Mari, have a son and daughter and five very special grandchildren.
