Jonathan Ray was born in London and educated at Eton College and Kent University. He worked in the Cafe Royal Cellars and Peter Dominics before joining Oddbins in 1984 and then Berry Bros and Rudd in 1986. The author gained early experience of wine through his father, wine writer Cyril Ray. In 1997 Jonathan completed a PhD in history at London University and his first book, Berrys' Best Cellar Secrets, was published in May 1998.
