This all-colour practical book provides a step-by-step, extensively illustrated guide to building an affordable single-seater car for road and track use. The design is loosely based on Formula One cars of the mid-1960s, powered by a motorcycle engine via a chain-driven differential. The down-to-earth text shows how to build the chassis, suspension components and glassfibre bodywork, and advises on how to modify and use a range of motorcycle engines. The end product is a budget-priced, high-performance, road-legal single-seater, ideally suited to track-day use - and a learning experience in performance-car engineering and design.
Chris Gibbs is Vice Secretary, Newsletter Editor and Technical Adviser of the Locost Car Club, having first built a Locost between 1997 and 1999. In 2006 he wrote Haynes's Build Your Own Sports Car, the success of which prompted this follow-up book.
Three-dimensional, scaled, colour working drawings, detailed descriptions, and photographs. Step-by-step instructions on building a strong tubular-steel chassis. How to source the power unit, transmission, suspension, steering, brakes and other parts from donor vehicles. Details of how to manufacture GRP body panels. Fully illustrated assembly instructions. Advice on how to put the finished car on the road successfully, including details of SVA test requirements, and a checklist of common SVA failure points.
