The Hauraki Gulf is a region of exceptional natural beauty and abundant recreational opportunities. A third of all New Zealanders live nearby, and many others come from around the country and overseas to enjoy the beaches, islands and waters. Exploring the Hauraki Gulf is an informative and handy guide for visitors and locals alike. Previously published as The Hauraki Gulf: From Bream Head to Cape Colville (Shoal Bay Press, 1999), this useful book has been extensively revised and greatly expanded to include the most up-to-date information.

Linda Bercusson was for many years staff journalist for the Department of Conservation. During this time she was also journalist in residence for the New Zealand Antarctic Programme. She is the author of Pohutukawa: Tree of Aotearoa and currently works as a freelance writer in Auckland. John Walsby is a well-known Auckland naturalist with a marine science background. A superb communicator of scientific information, for many years he wrote a nature column for the New Zealand Herald. He lives in Leigh in North Auckland.

Contents include: Concise and well-illustrated background information on geology, weather, plants, animals and marine life -- Maori legends relating to the Gulf; the history of Maori and European settlement -- The islands of the Gulf, with maps showing walking tracks and features of interest -- Regional parks, marine reserves and mainland beaches -- Best places for activities such as walking, kayaking, snorkelling, birdwatching -- 15 Bird's Eye maps -- Colour and historical photographs.
