Only a few months after a 25-year-long war ended in Afghanistan, the author accompanied a friend on her journey home: from Kabul to Kunduz, through the legendary steppe to the river Oxus, the boundary to Tajikistan. This is his journal of adventurous travels in an awakening country.

Born in 1955, Roger Willemsen has been an author, foreign correspondent, academic and critic, before becoming a television personality with his own show Willemsens Woche (Willemsen's Week) in 1991. Since then he has also worked as a documentary film-maker and producer. He has written several books, including one based on interviews with former inmates of the US detention camp in Guantanamo, Cuba. Christian Irrgang's photographs have been published by Stern, Spiegel, Focus Magazin and Chrismon. In 2002 his photographic portrait of the German president Johannes Rau was published to great critical acclaim.
