Wayne overqualified himself for guidebook writing by earning a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of California Berkeley, before forsaking academia for a life on the road that many university faculty envy. He is also the author of Moon Handbook Guatemala. Wayne has written for publications including Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the American Geographical Society's Focus, and often gives slide lectures on destinations he covers in his books. He lives in Oakland, California, with his wife Maria Laura Massolo, his daughter Clio Bernhardson-Massolo, their Alaskan malamute, Gardel (named after the iconic Argentine tango singer), and their recently adopted Akita, Sandro, (named after a contemporary Argentine pop singer also known as "El Maestro").
