Selective guidebook to winter climbs throughout the Lake District, split into western, eastern northern and southern sections. Confirms the area as a major winter climbing venue when conditions allow.
The two previous editions of this guide showed the potential of the region for winter climbing. With improvements in ice tools the last decade has seen an explosion in mixed buttress routes, confirming the area as a major winter climbing venue. All the climbs have been done under true winter conditions, and speculative or incomplete ascents have been omitted. Descriptions are from a consensus of opinion where available. Pitch lengths are given where necessary, but on some of the easier sections only overall lengths are indicated. A star system of grading is included. For ease of use the guide has been divided into four sections: north, south, east and west. A few routes local to the area but not actually in the Lake District have been included as they are not covered by any other guide. Access description, descents, grid references, altitude and aspect of crags and also, where relevant, a note on conditions have been included. Where it is known, the date of the first ascent is given.

Lakeland native Bill Birkett is one of Britain's foremost mountain writers and photographers. A leading climber and hill walker, and a former civil engineer, he has spent a lifetime exploring the hills and wild places of the world. His breathtaking photography illustrates numerous publications and his own books include the best selling Complete Lakeland Fells and Great British Ridge Walks, Classic Treks of the World and his recent definitive guidbooks Exploring The Lakes and Low Fells (Vols 1 and 2). Bill Birkett is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, Fédération Européene Des Associations De Jornalists Du Tourisme, Outdoor Writers Guild (Committee), Society of Authors, and the Fell and Rock Climbing Club of the English Lake District. Brian Davison has been winter climbing for some 30 years and has notched up an impressive list of first ascents in Scotland, Wales and the English Lake District. These include Big Daddy (VIII, 8) in Coire Sneachda, Mort (IX, 9) at Lochnagar, and Moss Gill Grooves (V, 6), Harvest (VII, 9) and Mechanical Orange (VIII, 8) all on Scafell. He has also made many expeditions overseas to such diverse areas as the Himalaya, Morocco, Greenland, Alaska and South Georgia. His intimate knowledge of the Lake District has further been enhanced by endurance feats such as completing an unsupported Bob Graham Round, and climbing all the Lakes' routes in Classic Rock in a day without use of a vehicle. He lives in Lancaster with his family and is a researcher at Lancaster University.
