In 1982, Karl-Werner Antrack and his wife Elsie make their first of many voyages over the sea to Southern Africa. Full of excitement and adventure for this unknown land and her inhabitants, they begin with a visit to family friends staying in Johannesburg, where they plan a round trip via Durban, Cape Town, the Table Mountain (the meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans) and part of Namibia. Amidst the factual details of this experience of a lifetime, Antrack's own thoughts are revealed in his scattering of poetry throughout the book. For while he is fascinated and charmed by the African people and their landscape, he cannot ignore the tumultuous times that he finds himself part of, with Apartheid in full swing. Told with all the humour and determination of a modern-day adventurer, Antrack lets us into his world, where we are shown a sensitive portrayal of all the wonders, and woes, of an ever-changing continent, and her amazing people.
