Wellington and Beyond

As the capital of New Zealand, Wellington is an important city in geographical, political and economic terms. Over recent years, however, the city has also gained an unofficial reputation for being the arts capital. There are various galleries and, of course, there is Te Papa Tongarewa (Museum of New Zealand). The Wellington region's splendidly rugged coastline offers plenty of recreational activities, too. If tramping, hiking or hunting appeal, the lure of the mountains ? there are two major ranges within 100 kilometres ? is hard to resist. And less than an hour's drive from the city centre can be found one of New Zealand's most exciting wine-producing regions.
