Hugh Clapperton, Scottish explorer and diplomat, made two expeditions into the interior of West Africa, the first across the Sahara Desert and the second inland from the Bight of Benin. His first expedition in 1822-24, crossed the Sahara to Borno. A second expedition, also an official mission of the British Government, was undertaken in 1825-27 and is the subject of this volume. Clapperton's diaries have been transcribed and reproduced in a form as close as possible to the original raw material.

Paul Lovejoy, Ph.D. (1973), University of Wisconsin, is Canada Research Chair in African Diaspora History and Distinguished Research Professor at York University, Toronto. He has published widely on slavery and African diaspora. Jamie Bruce Lockhart, (BA, Cantab, 1963), formerly of the British Diplomatic Service, has edited Clapperton in Borno. Journals of the Travels in Borno of Lieutenant Hugh Clapperton (1996) and Difficult and Dangerous Roads: Hugh Clapperton’s Travels in Sahara and Fezzan 1822-1825 (2000).
