This work combines a guide with a cultural history. The first section, which provides a background to ancient Egypt, its institutions and its people, is fully cross-referenced to the sights described in the remaining chapters. There are itineraries, not only of the most significant Pharaonic remains, but also Christian sites and the Islamic monuments around Cairo. Major monuments and accessible sites which are off the beaten track receive detailed surveys, written to give readers an insight into the purposes these monuments served along with basic descriptions of what remains to be seen today. Over 200 area maps, site plans and photographs are supplied for readers' orientation and to highlight the most important features of the monuments.
