Great pubs along the route of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales, starting at the George in Southwark
The pilgrims in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales begin their journey in a London inn and they stay at many more as they wend their way to Becket's tomb. Leading beer writer Roger Protz remains faithful to the route, visiting pubs of historic interest and breweries old and new before embarking on the Pilgrims' Way from Winchester to Canterbury, revealing fascinating history as well as a few more spots to sample a pint.

The Canterbury Ales is a feast of a book for those who love good beer, pubs, breweries … and Chaucer's literary masterpiece.

ROGER PROTZ is well known as a full-time writer on beer and pubs. He was the editor of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide from 2000-2018 and a columnist for What’s Brewing and BEER magazine. He is the twice winner of the Glenfiddich Drink Writer of the Year award and has received Lifetime Achievement awards from the British Guild of Beer Writers and the Society of Independent Brewers. He is also a frequent broadcaster, and in August 2016 a BBC Radio 4 food programme devoted an entire edition to his work as a beer writer. He lives in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
