The Portuguese accommodations selected in this book are not based on price, but rather on charm, comfort, location and, above all, on warmth of welcome. Each is described in detail and illustrated with a pen-and-ink drawing and accompanying maps.
Portugal was once one of the world's greatest powers. Reminders of this period of great wealth and prominence still exist today in the form of mighty castles, spectacular fortresses, beautiful mansions and elaborate cathedrals. This fabulous guide enables you to discover the most charming and historic places to stay and provides itineraries that will lead you to them by the most scenic and interesting routes. Travellers have trusted Karen Brown's guides for 20 years for their warm, engaging and up to date reviews of the finest inns and small hotels in Europe and California. Only the most charming places to stay make it onto the pages of these guides - no inn can buy its way in, and those not maintaining their standards every year are dropped. These guides are so reliable that travellers have come to plan their whole holidays around Karen Brown's recommendations.

Karen Brown began her publishing venture at nineteen, when she began to spend time in France and Britain researching, writhing and publishing her first two titles. Books on Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Ireland and Germany followed with the enlisted aid of mother, Clare Brown, a former travel agent whose experience proved invaluable. June Brown, an English woman, no relation, was recruited to the staff. This talented Karen Brown trio are solely responsible for the research, writing and production of these guides and personally visit every one that is included. The company is therefore intentionally intimate in size, which helps to maintain the quality and consistency of recommendation.
