Myanmar is a land of many contrasts. Fascinating discoveries await in the dense crowds of the capital metropolis, as well as in the remoteness of the Chin Mountains. When you go beyond the tourist highlights in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Inle Lake, you can now experience the authentic Myanmar. Many regions have been inaccessible for decades, which is how so many places of breathtaking originality and rare cultural achievements survived. The co-authors offer knowledgeable and entertaining insights into their own favourite places and lead you to the secluded and impressive gems.

Frauke Kraas studied geography, biology, ethnology and philosophy, receiving her doctorate in 1991 in Münster. She received her teaching certification in Bonn in 1996 and has been a professor of urban and social geography at the University of Cologne since 2000. She has been working in Myanmar since 1996, living there for two years and traveling almost the entire country for her research.

Regine Spohner studied cartography and geography in Karlsruhe, Cologne and Bonn. She received her doctorate in Bonn in 2004 and has been working at the Institute of Geography in Cologne since then, focusing her research projects on Myanmar with frequrent visits and extended stays.

Jörg Stadelbauer studied geography, history and Latin; 1972, he received his doctorate and in 1979 his teaching certification. From 1987 to 1991 he held a chair in Mainz, and from 1991 to 2009 he served as Chair of Cultural Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Freiburg. His work focuses on cultural geography, Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. He has visited Myanmar many times since 1996.
