The Governorate of Dhofar, Oman's southern province, stretches from Salalah in the south, across the monsoon mountains and up to the Empty Quarter in the north.

The phenomenon of the famous summer `khareef' wind makes this one of the most bio-diverse areas of the Arabian Peninsula. Most of Oman's plant, reptile, bird and mammal species are found in the Dhofar Mountain chain while the deep cold waters of the Arabian Sea coast support a diversity of sea life that is not found elsewhere in the region.



Today there are a wide range of programmes to conserve species such as the iconic Arabian leopard and the Arabian humpback whale. These studies involve government organisations, environmental NGOs, eco-tourists and volunteers.
