A personal record of Mairi Hedderwick's six-month solitary journey of the archipelago which forms the Western Isles of Scotland. The many sketches she made shows the reader the islands in all their diversity. There are cameos of everyday life drawn with humour, alongside landscapes of the Hebrides.
Mairi Hedderwick, famous for her Katie Morag children's books, has now turned her hand to a personal and unique record of her six-month solitary journey through the beautiful archipelago which forms the Western Isles of Scotland.
It was on a chilly March morning that she set off in an aged VW camper van to embark upon her journey, determined to fulfil a fantasy of travelling to every Hebridean isle. It was an exhausting but rewarding six months.
The resulting account of her travels and the many sketches she made show us the islands in all their diversity. We see swift and perceptive cameos of everyday life drawn with humour and affection alongside gorgeous landscapes which capture the truly magical beauty of the Hebrides.

Mairi Hedderwick, the creator of Katie Morag, is one of Scotland's best-known and best-loved author/illustrators. Born in Gourock and educated at the Edinburgh College of Art, she moved to the Isle of Coll, in the Hebrides, in 1962. Though her first home there had no electricity or running water, she settled to raise a family and teach art at the local primary school. Her three books for Canongate, An Eye on the Hebrides, Highland Journey and Sea Change, have been reprinted many times.
