The book attempts to capture a world governed by frenzied ritual, where the activities of local festivities transform the everyday into a theatre of the macabre. Christina Garcia Rodero won the Paneta Award in 1985, and the Recontre Award and the Smith Award in 1989. This book won the Arles Book Award in 1990.
