As a journalist living in Dundee, Alan Murphy enjoyed many opportunities to explore the glories of the Scottish Highlands before leaving his native country to travel in South America. During a stint working for the English-language Bolivian Times in La Paz, Alan met the editor of the South American Handbook and was invited to write a new series of Footprint guides to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela. But the pull of his homeland proved too strong and he eventually returned home to write Footprint guides to Scotland, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Scotland's Highlands & Islands. Work opportunities once again pulled him away, this time to the wilds of West Yorkshire, where he now lives with his wife, three children and dog.
