How much of the Reformation remains in its region of origin, known as Luther Country? It has shaped the early modern world because of the impact of Luther's teachings, and Wittenberg, Eisleben and the Wartburg Castle have become symbolic places. But there are also many other towns and landscapes in the old state of Saxony which reflect the outcome of his ninety-five theses and the subsequent division of western Christianity. The art historian and journalist Günter Kowa and the photographer Henning Kreitel have travelled this heartland of Protestantism. In his own elegant translation of his German book, published in 2017, Kowa brings historic events to life and shows what record there is of them in buildings and towns. He explores how they have changed over time and debunks some of the myths that surround them. Kreitel looks for the aura of places with an eye for unusual detail and a sense of atmosphere. In this way the book offers unique insights for the tourist as well as giving a lively account of the history of those turbulent times.

Günter Kowa, born in 1954, studied history and history of art in London, Bonn and Rome and earned his doctoral degree at the University of Bonn. In 1990 he published “Architektur der englischen Gotik”. From 1991 to 2008 he was on the editorial staff of the arts page of “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” in Halle. He is a free-lance journalist and lives in Berlin. Henning Kreitel, born in 1982, lives and works in Berlin. He studied photography at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart. He graduated with a photographic study of Berlin allotments has contributed to books and had his work shown in exhibitions. He is a member of the “Bund Freischaffender Fotodesigner” (Association of free-lance photo designers).
