Once Upon the Lagan

A vivid record of working-class experience at the turn of the century. The horse-drawn barges of the Lagan Canal once played a vital role in the transport system of Northern Ireland, carrying tons of merchandise between Belfast and the Lough Neagh ports. Personal memories of the surviving canal people -- lock-keepers and lightermen, bank-rangers and haulers, are included, as well as their favorite songs and poems from that period, together with documents from the Lagan Navigation company, and many evocative photographs from family albums.
