The fourth revised edition of this history of England from its earliest times up to the present day. It begins with the Old Stone Age and finishes with the Millennium Dome and describes all the major periods, significant people and events in between. It offers insights into the country's past and present and into the English character and culture.
"The Traveller's History" series is for travellers and students who feel they need more background information on a country than can be found in a guide. All the major periods of English history are dealt with, including the Roman occupation, and the invasions of the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans, and the power struggles of the medieval kings. The Reformation, the Renaissance and the Civil Wars are discussed, as well as the consequences of the Industrial Revolution and urbanism, and the establishment of an Empire which encompassed a quarter of the human race. In this century the Empire has been transformed into the Commonwealth, two victorious, but costly, World Wars have been fought, the Welfare State was established, and membership of the European Economic Community was finally achieved. There is an A-Z gazetteer which is cross referenced to the main text, and highlights sights, towns and places of historical importance.
Illustrated throughout with maps and line drawings, "A Traveller's History of England" offers an insight into the country's past and present and is a useful companion for all those who want to know more about a nation whose impact upon the rest of the world has been profound.
