A focus on the island of Nevis in the Eastern Caribbean, which describes the history and natural history of the island followed by a travel guide for those planning to visit the island. Together with St Kitts, Nevis forms the independent Commonwealth State of St Kitts-Nevis.
This volume is about an island situated in the north-eastern part of the Caribbean. It is the island called Nevis whose mountain is often capped with mist or cloud. There are only 35 square miles of Nevis and it is separated from the neighbouring island of St Kitts by a channel barely two miles wide. The climate is tropical and maritime with the trade winds blowing from an easterly direction most of the year. The temperature never falls below 60 degrees F nor rises above 90 degrees F, with little difference between winter and summer. The first part of this book is a brief history of Nevis from 1628, when it became one of the first English colonies, until 19th September 1983, when together with St Kitts it became an independent state. It was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton (1757); Horatio Nelson met and married Fanny Nisbet there (1787) at a time when the island's beauty, combined with the reputation of its planter and merchant families for social grace and good living, caused it to be known as "The Queen of the Caribees". The second part of the book is about the island as it is today, a guide to what to see and do and enjoy.
