A life-changing journey to the islands of Haida Gwaii off the northern coast of British Columbia to visit First Nation people who have lived in harmony with their environment for more than ten thousand years.
Kathleen Jones travelled to the islands of Haida Gwaii off the northernmost coastline of British Columbia, to visit a nation who have lived in harmony with their environment for more than ten thousand years. They have a saying, 'Everything is Connected', and their philosophy, Yah' Guudang, is about 'respect and responsibility, about knowing our place in the web of life, and how the fate of our culture runs parallel with the fate of the ocean, sky and forest people'. But there is a darker side to Haida history - the story of how the British Colonial administration reduced the population from more than twenty thousand to just over five hundred by a policy that has been identified as 'cultural genocide'.

Kathleen Jones is a novelist, biographer and poet living in the English Lake District. She is the author of more than fifteen books and is currently a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. Born and brought up on a small hill farm she spent more than ten years living in Africa and the Middle East, where she worked in English broadcasting. Her work has won a number of important prizes. 'A Passionate Sisterhood' (Virago) won the Barclays Bank Prize for Biography and her recent collection of poetry, 'Not Saying Goodbye at Gate 21' (Templar Poetry) won the Straid Award. Kathleen's biography of Catherine Cookson (Times Warner) was in the top 10 bestseller lists for more than 8 weeks. She now lives in an old mill beside one of northern England's major rivers and is a passionate environmentalist.
