The Azorean legends deal with everyday life in the past centuries, yet behind the regular routine they reveal a glimpse into the Azorean way of accepting life amidst nature's whims and human challenges. While visiting the localities mentioned in the stories the reader will be surprised to detect that the Azorean character and the impressive natural environment of the nine Azorean islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean have survived throughout the centuries as they were portrayed in the ancient tales.

Maria Ângela Azevedo Furtado-Brum was born on Pico and attended high school in Faial, after which she studied in Canada. In 1979 she returned to the Azores and taught at schools and at the university in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, while she co-authored school books. In the late 1980s Maria Ângela Azevedo Furtado-Brum started collecting the traditional stories and legends of the nine Azorean islands, which were published as Açores, lendas e outras Histórias and Contos Tradicionais Açorianos.
Regina Oberschelp de Meneses was born in Germany, studied to be a teacher and taught at Scottish schools and American universities, where she earned her PhD. In 1991, she moved to Terceira in the Azores, where she has been teaching at the university and various schools. She initiated a student exchange with German choirs at the EBS Tomás de Borba and the publication of the Azorean calendars (Edelsteine des Atlantiks) with photos by Paulo Henrique Silva.
