Mairi Hedderwick took a six-week voyage in "The Captain", down the Caledonian Canal, and out to sea. Through her words and illustrations, the reader is taken on a journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain, including the Lyne of Lorne and Loch Etive.
Mairi Hederwick took a six-week voyage in 'the captain', down the Caledonian Canal, and out to sea in the small, antiquated sailing boat. The voyage was her way of saying farewell to her island home by sailing the waters between island and mainland and exploring the fingers of fjords that indent the west coast of Scotland.
Through her words and fabulous illustrations, the reader is taken on an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain: Loch Linnhe, the Lyne of Lorne, Loch Etive, to name a few.
The book captures the true spirit of adventure, not only the dangers and difficulties, but also the moments of self-torment and doubt. A voyage of discovery.

Mairi Hedderwick, the creator of Katie Morag, is one of Scotland's best-known and best-loved author/illustrators. Born in Gourock and educated at the Edinburgh College of Art, she moved to the Isle of Coll, in the Hebrides, in 1962. Though her first home there had no electricity or running water, she settled to raise a family and teach art at the local primary school. Her three books for Canongate, An Eye on the Hebrides, Highland Journey and Sea Change, have been reprinted many times.
