A short and snappy overview of God's Own Country (Godzone) for New Zealanders, overseas visitors and new immigrants, this book takes a light-hearted look at what it means to be Kiwi. In a quirky humorous fashion, with short entries, bullet-pointed lists and text blocks, the author provides detail about the land of the long white cloud - the kind of essential information that can't be found in school textbooks, tourist brochures or immigration documents. Included are lists of Kiwis the Aussies claim as their own, DIY inventors who have made it on the world stage, and the national heroes. You can learn how to give a Maori greeting and crack the code of Kiwi-speak, discover facts about the kiwi bird, events held through the year, and marvel over curious statistics. You'll also find local knowledge, sporting codes, cooking tips, a kiwi glossary, how to eat, dress and swear like a Kiwi, and a potted list of the essential attributes that make up the Kiwi character.

After graduating from Otago University, Rosemary Hepozden started travelling, often finding herself in places so unfamiliar and uncomfortable that she longed for a pocket-sized guide that would take her well beyond the 'must do' attractions and recommended restaurants, and right to the core of what it meant to be local. She wanted, in other words, instant access to a culture. When she returned to New Zealand from a two-year teaching stint in Turkey, she saw the need for such a book from the other side, as she found herself decoding the Kiwi lifestyle for a somewhat startled Turkish man who had accompanied her home. As she lovingly interpreted all things Aotearoa, she remembered once again just how cool it is to call yourself a Kiwi. This book distils the essence of that experience.
