New Zealand: An island journey is an informal look at New Zealand and its people through the lens of German photographer Karl Johaentges. It is a colourful portrayal of New Zealand's stunning landscape, and the diversity, warmth and spirit that characterise its inhabitants. Looking at the country with the fresh perspective of a visitor's eye, Karl's photographs celebrate the diversity of the landscape, from green plains, mossy forests and rugged mountains to fiords, magnificent beaches, thermal springs and volcanic craters. Writer Jackie Blackwood gives an overview of the areas they have visited on their travels round the country, arranged in geographical order as they work their way down the South Island from Banks Peninsula to Bluff, and back up the West Coast to the North Island, ending at Cape Reinga. The book is not only focussed on nature however, but also features fascinating accounts of people from all walks of life who they meet along the way. New Zealand was originally published by National Geographic Germany.

Karl Johaentges was born in Germany in 1948 and trained originally as an architect. He started his photographic career while working for the New Zealand architect Ian Athfield in Wellington, and on returning to Germany founded his publishing company KaJo. Since then he has produced prizewinning photographic German books and his work has been published in many major German magazines. Pictures from New Zealand was published by Craig Potton Publishing in 2004 and is still in print. Jackie Blackwood is a writer and has produced numerous book projects with her husband Karl Johaentges. As a Scottish-born Australian, she has always had a fascination for foreign countries. Karl Johaentges and Jackie Blackwood live in Hanover and spend several months each year in their second home of New Zealand.
