The work describes the author's journey in 1912, from Tunis through Algeria and across the desert regions of Tougourt.
George Edward Woodbery (1855-1930) was an American writer who became Professor of Literature at Columbia University between 1891 and 1904. During his lifetime he produced works ranging from poetry to literary criticism. In retirement he spent many years travelling throughout the world, and it was from a journey to North Africa in 1912 that the present work resulted. From Tunis the author made his way westward, through Algeria and Tlemcen and Figuig, visiting the desert regions of Tougourt, and all the time recording the sights and scenes of the desert and its inhabitants. 'North Africa and the Desert', here published in facsimile from the original edition of 1914, combines the author's narrative with lyrical and sensitive impressions of his journey. Overall the work provides an unusually refreshing glimpse of North Africa through the eyes of a poet and man of letters.
