HERBER E. PLUTSCHOW was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1939. After studying at the University of Paris and then at Waseda University in Tokyo, he obtained a doctorate in Japanese studies at Columbia University in New York. He now teaches Japanese literature and history at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his work on classical Japanese literature has been published in several languages. DONALD KEENE, the well-known scholar in Japanese studies, is currently Professor of Japanese at Columbia University. The author of numerous works on Japanese culture, he received the Order of the Rising Sun in 1974 for his distinguished role in the introduction of Japanese literature abroad.
