William J. Murnane was born in New York in 1945, but moved to Venezuela soon after. Somehow missing a vocation for Latin American archaeology, he specialized in Ancient Egyptian at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. A prolific writer, he became Professor of Ancient History at the University of Memphis, Tennessee, and field director of an ongoing project recording and publishing the reliefs and inscriptions in the Great Hypostyle Hall of the Temple of Karnak. He died suddenly in 2000. Aidan Dodson was born in London in 1962 and studied Egyptian archaeology at Durham, Liverpool and Cambridge. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, where he has based since 1996. He is the author of a dozen books and over two hundred articles and reviews, and regularly devises and leads tours to Egypt. Elected a Fellow of Society of Antiquaries of London in 2003, he has lectured all over the world and lives in Bristol, with his wife Dyan, who he met while teaching an evening class in Egyptology and to whom he became engaged in a burial chamber in Western Thebes.
