"Catalonia, a Self-Portrait" narrates a tale of tremendous literary and artistic achievement by a minority culture that thrives within the larger, dominant cultures of Spain and Europe. Some of the greatest names in Western art during this century have been Catalan. The architect Antoni Gaud', the painters Salvador Dal' and Joan Mir - the composers Enric Granados, Isaac Alb niz, and Frederic Mompou, the cellist Pablo Casals, and singers Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caball, and Jos Carreras, among others, have commanded the attention of millions. "Catalonia's" writers, on the other hand, in particular those who opted to use the Catalan classics, as it were, deal with contemporary Catalonia and its people, including some of the outstanding figures named above. Grouped under the general headings 'Place', 'Time', and 'People', the writings convey the spirit of Catalonia and the Catalans.
JOSEP MIQUEL SOBRER, Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Indiana University, is author of L'epica de la realitat, La doble soledat d'Ausias March, and El libre dels oracles, and co-editor of The Singers' Anthology of 20th-Century Spanish Songs.
