The number of biotechnology patent applications has doubled within seven years from 7,000 in 1988 to 14,000 in 1994. The relevant state-of-the-art has grown exponentially and so have problems, which patent offices, courts, applicants as well as their competitors have to master whenever they are dealing with the patentability of biotechnology inventions.
