The AYBIL uniquely combines scholarly articles, invited lectures, book reviews and Australian government contributions on Australian legislation, cases and State practice relevant to international law. Volume 41 also features a collection of articles from the Four Societies Conference on areas beyond national jurisdiction.
The Australian Year Book of International Law is Australia’s longest standing and most prestigious dedicated international law publication, having commenced in 1965 and now encompassing 41 volumes.

The Year Book aims to uniquely combine scholarly commentary with contributions from Australian government officials. Each volume contains a mix of scholarly articles, invited lectures, book reviews, notes of decisions by Australian and international courts, recent legislation, and collected Australian international law state practice.

The Year Book focuses on Australian practice in general international law and across a broad range of sub-fields including human rights, environmental law and legal theory, which are of interest to international lawyers worldwide.

Esmé Shirlow teaches and researches in public international law, international dispute settlement, and international investment law and arbitration. Esmé maintains a practice in the field of international law advising parties to investment treaty claims and in proceedings before the International Court of Justice. Prior to joining the ANU, she worked in the Australian Government’s Office of International Law. Donald R. Rothwell is one of Australia’s leading experts in International Law with specific focus on the law of the sea; law of the polar regions, use of force and implementation of international law within Australia. He is the author of 28 books and over 200 book chapters and articles including, with Tim Stephens, the influential and respected academic text, The International Law of the Sea.
