This book is about retirement income security. This income security is provided by national public pensions, corporate pensions, and individual and reverse mortgages. However, these systems vary greatly from country to country and, in many countries, do not provide sufficient coverage. Ensuring income security in old age is an important issue that must be resolved in the rapidly aging environment of the world.

From the perspective of financial consumers, this book cross-sectionally surveys public pensions, corporate pensions, individual pensions and reverse mortgages and compares them among many important nations. This gives many implications from the perspective of designing an overall income security for each individual. In addition, it presents many of the issues needed for these sustainable and comprehensive income security.


Hongmu Lee is a professor of risk management and insurance at the Waseda University, Tokyo in Japan. He received his Ph.D. from the Waseda University. He is also the President of the Insurance and Risk Management Institute of Waseda University. This Insurance and Risk Management Institute is aiming the research with cooperation between industry and the academic world internationally on the insurance and risk management. He has authored several books and articles in academic and professional journals mainly Korea and Japan.

Gianni Nicolini is Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Rome, Italy). He received a PhD in Banking and Finance at the Universit of Rome Tor Vergata. His main research interests include consumer finance, financial literacy, and financial behaviors, including pension planning behaviors. He has published in international peer reviewed academic journals and published several books.

Man Cho is a full professor at KDI School of Public Policy and Management in Korea, and is currently serving as Chairman of International Academy of Financial Consumers, an international academic association. His teaching and research areas include FinTech, credit risk management, real estate finance, and and urban and regional economics. Prior to his current position, he worked for Fannie Mae and the World Bank, and also taught at the Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. He holds a Ph.D degree in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1991.
