Unleashing a new politics of sexual liberation
What does sexual freedom mean today? The last 20 years have seen enormous gains for LGBT rights - but who, and what, has been left out of this success story?

In this provocative polemic, activist and writer Scott Long condemns the moral mainstream which has replaced the struggle for sexual liberation with the narrow demand for gay marriage. Taking an international perspective informed by his many years based in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Long reports on the ongoing tensions between LGBT activism, commitment to social justice, and an anti-capitalist imaginary. He highlights three flashpoint issues - identity politics, money (sex work), and power (imperialism) - to judge the achievements of LGBT activism through the radical politics of sex and gender. With devastating clarity and biting wit, he demands bold new models of solidarity with queers in the Global South, shows how the failure to defend sex workers' rights has been catastrophic for the LGBT movement, and exposes the major organisations' complicity with imperialist agendas.

By confronting the most controversial, taboo and divisive issues, this is a cutting appraisal of international LGBT politics today.

Scott Long is an international activist founding LGBT rights programs across the globe. He has worked for Human Rights Watch and is visiting fellow at the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School. He has written for the Guardian and the Irish Times, and has a popular blog A Paper Bird.
